Greetings all,

Yesterday, in the Teacher PD session, there was a question about CS Teaching standards. Pat gave some information to the group but this is the response from CSTA.

Hi, Jennifer. Sara-Becca forwarded me your email for a response.

CSTA does not have standards for CS teachers. ISTE does have standards for CS teachers and they are planning a revision this year. CSTA will have representation on the Standards for CS Educators Stakeholder Advisory Council (including myself). I believe they plan to solicit public input during the 2018 ISTE Conference.

Additionally, ETS has developed a Praxis exam for CS educators and I believe that Pearson is working on an exam as well. The first administration of the Praxis exam will be in Fall 2018. I know that Dave Benedetto, David.Benedetto at doe.nh.gov<mailto:David.Benedetto at doe.nh.gov>, developed a set of CS teacher standards for New Hampshire if you would like to contact him. There may be other states as well.

Also, there are some CS Teaching Methods courses already in existence. If you and/or your higher education partner is interested, I can put you in touch with one of the professors who teaches a methods course.

I certainly understand the reluctance of the higher education institution to develop a CS education methodology course for as CS Ed pre-service and in-service program without CS teaching standards. Many states are facing the same dilemma. You might want to share the information that I have provided with your higher education institution. Waiting until the CS teacher standards are revised will delay the opportunity for Maryland CS educators to take a methods course in-state.

There is much movement in the K-12 CS education world right now. We are all working to get all the pieces in place, but it is a huge task, especially when every state is different.

I hope this information is helpful. Please contact me if you have further questions or if I can be of further assistance.

Deborah

Thank you for the seedy reply,

The standards for teachers are a little different. The CSTA standard are for what students should know or be able to do, but teaching standards are for how CS teachers should teach the topics. What they are expected to incorporate in their learning environment. Similar to these:
https://www.iste.org/standards/for-educators

The higher education institution stated that they could not justify a CS education methodology course for as CS Ed pre-service and in-service program without CS teaching standards. The existence of CS teaching standards demonstrates a need for a program. In our state, teacher prep programs have to be rooted in teaching standards.

Jennifer - Are you referring to something other than the CSTA K-12 CS standards? https://www.csteachers.org/page/standards

Greetings Sara-Becca,

One of the higher education institutions stated that the lack of teaching standards was a roadblock to creating a pre-service CS teacher program.
