Subject: MSDE CTE CS POS questions
To: CS Matters in Maryland <csmattersinmaryland at gmail.com>

Hi Everyone-

I brought this topic up in the spring about our then current CTE supervisor
wanting to move to the PLTW CS pathway b/c as she stated, that is the
direction that MSDE is headed. Since we have a new supervisor coming in
this is my chance to convince him/her we should keep our local track and
not adopt the PLTW one. Want to make sure I'm informed before I state my
case. I would pose these questions directly to MSDE, however, I believe
they will re-direct me to our local supervisor as has happened in the past.

This MSDE link
<http://www.marylandpublicschools.org/programs/Pages/CTE/CTEprograms.aspx> only
has PLTW CS under the IT category (which makes me think that MSDE will only
support the PLTW CS track). However, this link
<http://www.mdcteprograms.org/pos/cluster.php?CID=8> has CS and PLTW CS
listed as POS options (which looks like we can keep our local program).

The latter link w/ the CS option has the CyberWatch class as the 4th class.
My previous supervisor said that: MSDE is dropping this course and will
only support the PLTW CS track; only the PLTW CS track would receive
Perkins funding; MSDE would not support/approve a locally developed 4th
class in lieu of CyberWatch for a local pathway.

Is MSDE doing away w/ the reg (locally developed) CS track?
If so, then case closed. Will have to do the PLTW track.

If not, is it possible to 1) get a locally developed 4th (Capstone) class
approved and 2) will locally developed CS POS's be eligible for Perkins
funding?

Hope I'm making sense.

Any info is appreciated. Thanks.
Mike
