The Department of Computer Science of Royal Holloway University of London is seeking expressions of interest for four Post-Doctoral Research Associate positions to be covered in January 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter. Outstanding candidates in the areas of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics are invited to apply.
The positions are funded by three grants awarded to Royal Holloway by Innovate UK (https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/innovate-uk#content) in the context of the program “Robotics and AI: inspect, maintain and repair in extreme environments”. All these projects will be carried out in consortiums including other universities (e.g. University of Edinburgh, University of Manchester, University of Bristol and Royal College of Art), industry (e.g. Thales, Plant Integrity, Callen Lenz and Barrnon) and end users (e.g. Network Rail, Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult and UK Atomic Energy Authority). The projects are the following:
* Prometheus - A Reconfigurable Robotic Platform(s) with Advanced Sensing for Confined Spaces
* MIMRee - Multi-Platform Inspection, Maintenance & Repair In Extreme Environment (Offshore Wind Farms)
* Connect-R - Providing Structure in Unstructured Hazardous Environments

===== Applicant's Profile =====
The successful candidates will hold a PhD or equivalent, have a research record in artificial intelligence or robotics and a strong interest in practice-driven research. Experts in AI planning, Cognitive Robotics, Machine Learning and Data Fusion are particularly encouraged to apply. Experience in engaging with industry or contributing to outreach activities would also be valuable. The duties and responsibilities of these posts include conducting individual and collaborative research on the theme of the projects and producing high-quality outputs for publication in high-profile journals or conference proceedings.
These are 2-year posts, available from January 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter. The salary starts at £35,333 per annum - including London allowance. The positions will be based in Egham, Surrey, within commuting distance from London, Europe’s most dynamic technology hub.

The Department, established in 1968 (one of oldest Computer Science departments in the world), is one of the top UK departments for Computer Science. In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014), it scored 11th for the quality of our research output, with a third of the publications recognised as world-leading and a further half internationally excellent (87% in total). The Department is home to outstanding researchers in algorithms and complexity, artificial intelligence, bioinformatics, distributed and global computing, machine learning, software language engineering and type theory.
Over the past five years, the department has undertaken an ambitious plan of expansion: eleven new academic members of staff were appointed, new undergraduate and integrated-masters programmes were created, and five new postgraduate-taught programmes were launched. The department is involved in multiple inter/multidisciplinary activities, from electrical engineering to psychology and social sciences.
