I've been talking back and forth with Pat Yongpradit the past few weeks
trying to help get evidence that counties are confused about the options
for the CS pathway and that they want to have a choice about what CS
courses they offer in their schools.

Attached is a document that Pat put together by polling district leaders to
get an idea of how many schools in MD are offering CS (elementary, middle
and high) so it may not be totally accurate, but it's of interest.

He brought it to MSDE last week with somewhat disastrous results. He said
it was the worst state dept of ed meeting ever out of more than 30 that
he's been to. They were offended by his statistics and asked why he was
trying to make Maryland look bad. (these documents were not to be shared
outside of Maryland) Marquita, Lynne and Scott were outspoken about their
support for PLTW only and so sadly he was barely able to hold a
conversation with the people from the non-CTE side (Angie Holocker, Debby
Ward (math and K-8 CS), Carol Williamson) who he really wanted to meet with
to discuss CS for All. The non-CTE side didn't even know that the CTE side
was working on K12 standards for MD and asked to be invited.

Here is what he said about the meeting with Hogan's office on Friday of
last week. He was trying to direct the funding for CS from the governors4cs
agreement to go to the districts to choose and support the program of their
choice rather than to MSDE because of the single-sided, PLTW only, view
MSDE has of CS:
"I had a great meeting with the Govs office. Adam Dubitsky (ed advisor) and
Cassie Shirk (legislative office). We talked about how funding could be
pursued. What was great about it was that they were positive and wanted to
figure out a way. They like the idea of money going straight to districts."

He's been asking if we know about our NSF funding and when, or if, the MCCE
would be an active entity in MD.
