This will be a good mini-project for some of the students to work
on -- look through the course listings and majors listings, and
come up with an initial proposal of what we should "count" as CS
courses/majors and how we might want to group courses/majors
within the "CS" category. A good way to do this might be for a
couple of people to independently come up with their suggestions,
then get together to compare and contrast and generate a consensus
recommendation, which Megean and I can review.<br>

<div>Marie and Megean,</div>

<div>I am following up on your request for data regarding
students taking Computer Science courses in high school and
their transition to college. I have started delving into the
data to fulfill your request and will need some clarifying
input from you in order to complete the request.</div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>All of the high school courses are cross-walked to SCED
(School Courses for the Exchange of Data) codes. I have
attached a list of all of the SCED code from NCES and have
filtered the list to show only those courses in IT and
Engineering. I will need your assistance to identify how
broadly or narrowly you would like to define Computer Science
for this request. I included Engineering in the filter
because of courses like Geo-spacial, Modeling &
Simulation, Digital Electronics, etc and didn't know if you
would like them included or not. You are welcome to remove
the filter an review all courses as well. I have added a
column "Computer Science" for you to indicate the courses that
you would like included. </div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>For the transition to college part, we do not yet have
course level data from the colleges however, we could
potentially provide data for students that declare a major
when they enroll in college. College majors are all
classified using CIP (Classification of Instructional
Programs) codes. While there is a Computer Science major,
again, I will need your help in defining the breadth of CS
related majors you would like to include. My initial thought
would be broad and include any majors in the 11 series
excluding those in the 11.06 family and include the 14.09 and
15.12 families (Computer Engineering). Please let me know
your thoughts. A full listing of CIP Codes is available on
the NCES website <a href="https://nces.ed.gov/ipeds/cipcode/browse.aspx?y=55" target="_blank">https://nces.ed.gov/<wbr>ipeds/cipcode/browse.aspx?y=55</a></div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>I anticipate I will be able to have data for you within a
week, once we decide on these items.</div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>Please feel free to contact me to discuss further.</div>
