<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-top:6.0pt;text-align:justify"><span style="color:#454545;mso-fareast-language:EN-AU">Artificial intelligence (AI)-based autonomous and intelligent systems are transforming human lives in unprecedented ways. AI-based projects
implemented by national and local governments play a key role in enabling the widespread deployment of AI towards improving the quality of human life, as well as in developing and shaping AI policy towards the betterment of human society. Government projects
present some unique challenges including deploying at scales of millions of users at national and/or regional levels, ensuring fair and responsible use of the technology, guaranteeing accessibility across different economic, demographic and socio-cultural
levels, and providing methods to transparently measure and report to the public metrics related to the technology’s accountability, adoption and impact. Research methods and techniques developed in academia and industry that form the underlying technology
in many government projects are usually not designed with many of these factors in mind, and, might have to be rebuilt or redesigned before they can be integrated in government projects. Our special issue invites articles that could help bridge this technology
gap to inform current and future researchers and practitioners with experiences, challenges, best-practices, success stories and lessons learned from AI projects done in partnership with and/or to support international, national, regional and local government
initiatives. Articles describing planned and in-progress projects, from different phases of the project life-cycle including planning, design, implementation, evaluation, deployment and maintenance are welcome. Overviews of fully-deployed tools and systems,
expository articles, and, blue-sky and visionary papers on the role of government in shaping the future of AI and AI policy are also invited.
