Call for Papers for the Special Issue on Affective Robotics

Building an affective robot is a scientific and technological challenge: affective robotics is a research field aimed at a unified view of approaches inspired by neuroscience, psychology, cognitive science, developmental and behavioral science, artificial intelligence, and robotics. Today, robots at the state of the art can recognize simple emotions in the human user and mimic simple emotions. However, no robot state of the art is considered a genuinely affective robot. Scholars agree that a genuinely affective robot would change the current views on technology: it would not be a “nice companion” but a novel artifact. Moreover, facing the problem of robot emotions would be significant in studying emotions in humans and animals.

The special issue of the IEEE Transactions on Affective Computing on Affective Robotics will concern the theoretical studies, the computational models, and the case studies of affective robotics. Topics related to this are:
-       the role of a body in an affective robot;
-       cognitive robotics and affective robotics;
-       software and hardware issues for affective robotics;
-       learning and developmental approaches in affective robotics;
-       symbolic and neural representations in affective robots;
-       LLMs for an affective robot;
-       theory of mind for an affective robot;
-       measurements and assessments of emotions in an affective robot;
-       ethical and trust issues in affective robotics;
- empirical studies and industrial applications of affective robotics.
