Dear colleagues,
The ESSA SIG “Using qualitative data to inform behavioural rules”<http://cfpm.org/qual2rule/> invites you to the last two editions of the Qual2Rule Seminars – A Series of Seminars on Experiences of Using Qualitative Data and Methods in Social Simulation!
The plan of each of the seminar is 30 min talk + 30 min discussion. In the first part of the first 30 min, the invited speakers will talk shortly about their research in general. In a second part of the 30 min slot, they will go into the methodological details of using qualitative data and methods in their modelling practices. The third part of this 30 min slot will focus on brief stories related to the modelling process - this would be more about the personal experiences of modelling, challenges when interacting with colleagues, managing the participation of informants, publishing the research etc.
When and where? First Tuesday of each month, at 13.00 CET, via Zoom
Upcoming seminars (2022) (PLEASE NOTE THE CHANGES IN DATE OR TIME):
November: on MONDAY 31st of October, 13:00 CET - Geertje Bekebrede and Igor Nikolic, Delft University of Technology – title TBA
December: on Tuesday the 6th of December, 15:00 CET - César García Díaz, Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, Colombia – title TBA
Past seminars (2021-2022) (slides and/or recordings can be found on the Qual2Rule website: http://cfpm.org/qual2rule/):
October 5th – LeRon Shults, Agder University, Norway, “Qual2Rule: Qualitative methods and data in social simulation”
November 2nd – Patrycja Antosz, NORCE Norwegian Research Centre, Norway, “Mechanism of structural shirking”
December 7th – Sara Mehryar, London School of Economics, UK, “Making Use of Mental models to Capture Human Adaptation Behavior”
February 1st – cancelled due to illness
March 1st – Martin Neumann, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, Germany, "Growing artificial cultures."
April 5th – Amineh Ghorbani, Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands, “Modelling institutions to add social backbone to artificial societies”
May 3rd – session in SocSimFesT2022 – Social Simulation Festival 2022
June 7th – Sukaina Bharwani, Stockholm Environment Institute Oxford, UK, title to be announced
July & August – no seminar because of holiday time
September 6th – Jakub Bijak et al, University of Southampton, UK, "Capturing the complexity of human migration: Towards an interdisciplinary model-building process".
October 4th - Christopher Frantz, NTNU, Norway, and Saba Siddiki, Syracuse University, US, “Institutional Grammar 2.0. Revisiting the institutional grammar to facilitate rigorous institutional analysis”
The objectives of this seminar series are:
· to develop a conversation on guidelines and tools that will help modellers to integrate qualitative perspectives into their modelling research;
· to offer a space for the network to discuss their interests on agent-based modelling/social simulation and qualitative perspectives and meet other liked minded people.
Audience - everybody interested in Agent-based modelling :) Or, more specifically:
· Early career researchers with interest in learning how other colleagues deal with decision making processes when using qualitative data and methods to inform their models.
· Researchers interested in discussing the entanglement between agent-based models, relations, people, and interests in empirical (and/or theoretical) settings.
· Scholars with interest in accountability and transparency in developing agent-based models.
If you want to participate in this seminar series, please fill in this registration form by Sunday the 23rd of October: https://forms.gle/Nn5UtYNNWUW7JVaG7 . This is not necessary if you have filled in this form before the date of this email!
Best regards,
Melania, Juan, and Bruce.
