Job Summary
We are inviting applications for a postdoctoral researcher to join the
newly established National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Institute for
Student AI Teaming (www.iSAT.ai <http://www.isat.ai>) which aims to develop
AI technologies to facilitate rich socio-collaborative learning experiences
by engaging with students and teachers. In this position, you will work
with a multidisciplinary research team to deepen our understanding of
collaborative learning, small group work, and computer supported
collaborative learning/work (broadly) and as it relates to AI-enhanced K-12
education (more specifically). The job responsibilities of this position
include: conducting and publishing original research on collaboration;
facilitating data collection in both lab- and classroom- settings; and
participating in the shared-governance of the Institute.
You will work with Dr. Sidney D’Mello
<https://sites.google.com/site/sidneydmello/> and Dr. Peter Foltz
<http://peterfoltz.me/> and a vibrant research team encompassing
researchers in Cognitive Science, Computer Science, Psychological Sciences,
& Education. The position offers a unique postdoctoral training experience
and unsurpassed publishing opportunities within multi-disciplinary,
multi-institution, grant-funded projects. You will be encouraged to publish
extensively, advance your own research program, develop advanced technical
skills, strengthen your research portfolio, develop leadership skills, and
gain expertise in authoring grant proposals.
Who We Are
The Institute for Student-AI Teaming (iSAT) aims to develop, deploy, and
study AI Partners that collaborate naturally with students and teachers
through speech, gesture, gaze, and facial expression in real-world
classrooms. The AI partners will be designed in close collaboration with
educators and students, with the aim of supporting students to develop STEM
competencies, disciplinary practices, and collaborative problem-solving
skills. The long-term impact of the Institute will be to help realize the
grand challenge of “Education for All”, by leading the nation towards a
future where all students – especially those whose identities are
underrepresented in STEM – routinely participate in rich and rewarding
AI-enabled collaborative learning experiences that scale, resulting in
deeper student engagement and persistence in STEM, more inclusive classroom
cultures, and significant improvements in learning outcomes.
iSAT is hosted and supported by the Institute of Cognitive Science (ICS
<https://www.colorado.edu/ics/>) at CU Boulder. Founded in 1968, the
mission of ICS is to understand and enhance human cognition, learning, and
development through the creation of interdisciplinary partnerships. ICS
fosters rich scientific interchange across researchers from a broad range
of disciplines including Artificial Intelligence, Linguistics, Psychology,
Neuroscience, Computer Science, Philosophy, and Education. ICS also
specializes in incubating cutting edge, state-of-the-art research centers
such as iSAT.
What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be:
-
Conducting and publishing research related to collaborative
processes/outcomes and computer-supported collaborative learning/work
-
Organizing and managing distributed teams of researchers, professional
staff, and students to collect, manage, and analyze data on collaboration
-
Contributing to the shared governance of the AI Institute by serving on
pertinent committees (e.g., the Executive Committee or the Community Hub)
as well as participating in team meetings, annual retreats, and other
events.
What We Can Offer
Anticipated starting salary is $60,000-70,000, commensurate with experience
and education. Position is for 2-4 years, renewed annually pending
successful performance review.

scientific articles.
What You Will Need
-
Demonstrated research experience in one or more of the following areas:
collaborative problem solving, collaborative learning, small group work,
team science.
-
Knowledge of pertinent theoretical frameworks on collaboration (e.g.,
collaborative problem solving, team science, collaborative learning)
-
Advanced statistical/AI methods to analyze complex multimodal,
multiscale, and/or multiparty data (e.g., complex network analysis,
multilevel vector autoregression, conditional random fields, hidden markov
models, recurrent neural networks, deep learning).
-
Strong writing and communication skills and the ability to conduct
research in interdisciplinary teams.
-
Scripting/programming skills (e.g., R, Python, Matlab)
