2021

*This workshop will be entirely virtual.

Content

The purpose of this workshop is to help researchers develop methodological
skills, especially in areas that are relatively new to them. With HRI
researchers coming from diverse backgrounds in computer science,
engineering, informatics, philosophy, psychology, and more disciplines, we
can’t be expert in everything. In this workshop, participants will be
grouped with a mentor to enhance their study design and interdisciplinary
work.

Participants will submit 4-page papers with a small introduction and
detailed method section for a project currently in the design process. In
small groups led by a mentor in the area, they will discuss their method
and obtain feedback. The workshop will include time to edit and improve the
study. Workshop mentors include Drs. Cindy Bethel, Hung Hsuan Huang, Selma
Šabanović, Brian Scassellati, Megan Strait, Komatsu Takanori, Leila
Takayama, and Ewart de Visser, with expertise in areas of real-world study,
empirical lab study, questionnaire design, interview, participatory design,
and statistics.

Intended Participants

We especially encourage researchers who are branching into a field that is
new to them, early career researchers, and graduate students to submit
their work in progress.

Submissions

We welcome submissions from various areas of HRI, HAI, HCI, multimodal
interaction, etc. Participants are encouraged to submit a project that is
currently in the design process or completed but contains weakness in
design and methods sections. The submissions should emphasize the design
and method parts (rather than the parts such as introduction, results,
etc.), and explain them in more detail within 4 pages including figures and
references. The cover page should include up to 6 keywords and a list of
top 3 mentors that the participants would want to be mentored by, so we can
match papers with suitable mentors. Submissions will be accepted based on
the detail of the method section, originality of the research and the
potential contributions to the field.

For more details, please check the workshop website.

Publication

We will invite workshop participants to contribute to a “lessons learned”
paper about how the papers in this workshop improved.
