Dear Colleagues,
The Internet of Things (IoT) heralds a new era of hyper-connectedness where almost every tangible object is able to transmit information through the Internet. The IoT enables ubiquitous and unbounded connectivity of a diverse range of devices at any time and within any place, thus having the potential to transform every aspect of our lives, from the way we receive health care to the way we live in our homes. However, there is a dark side to the IoT revolution. The IoT poses significant challenges to our security and privacy that remain unresolved.
Due to the rapid and progressive role of the IoT-enabled platform with self-driven capabilities, miniaturized devices have entirely reshaped different domains, such as healthcare, autonomous driving, industrial systems, smart cities, and smart homes; at the same time, numerous challenges and threats have been imposed by cyber-attackers, adversaries, and third un-trusted parties. This practice causes not only substantial economic losses to the abovementioned domains but also puts in danger the lives of individuals or users.
Further, the advent of the IoT raises significant privacy concerns. For example, IoTs raise the possibility of widespread and invasive data surveillance of private individuals across national and international borders without their knowledge or agreement. The ease with which this data can be collected may drive global trends toward higher levels of data collection for the purpose of profit. IoTs may also result in the loss of pseudonymity, as the gathering of information may allow individuals to be identified from their historical data. As many devices on the IoT will likely use low-cost sensors and will not undergo rigorous security testing, there is a considerably high risk that said devices will be vulnerable to sabotage and manipulation.
Driven by rapidly evolving security and privacy challenges, everyone from IoT device manufacturers to information technology (IT) staff, and from hardware engineers to cloud management entities need to provide innovative security, privacy solutions. Additionally, to present clear and better insights about the important and valid arguments for risk assessment, threat management and attack rectification in present IoT-empowered applications are required.
This Special Issue on “Recent Advances in Security and Privacy for IoT Applications” addresses security and privacy challenges of IoTs. Special emphasis is on the infrastructure underpinning the IoT system, including networking, protocols, applications, and data manipulations. In addition, the Special Issue provides up-to-date research findings that cover both strategic and technical security, privacy challenges, and mitigation approaches for protecting and individuals’ information and privacy. The topics of interest include but are not limited to:
Security, privacy, ethics, and legal frameworks;
Risk assessment and mitigation in the IoT domain;
Innovative security solutions for IoT infrastructures;
Privacy-preserving in IoT-based applications;
Blockchain-driven green and decentralized domains;
Secure and private frameworks and protocols for IoT;
Machine-learning-based security and privacy solutions;
Blockchain technologies for reliable and trustworthy computing;
Biometric modalities for individuals’ authentication in IoT;
Security perimeters for resource-constrained IoT devices;
Device authentication and device identity management.
