Current Trends in Research on Software Agents and

Agent-Based Software Development

Last Call for Papers

About the Special Issue

After more than 20 years from the very first attempts at using software agents as building blocks of complex software systems, as advocated by relevant international initiatives like FIPA and by a significant body of literature, we witness today high-profile applications of software agents, even if agent-based software development cannot be considered common practice. The special issue is intended to represent a milestone in the research on software agents and agent-based software development by clearly identifying current trends and hot topics, and by providing a informed outlook on the future of discussed themes.

The special issue targets high-quality papers discussing relevant topics for the current research on software agents and agent-based systems. Submissions to the special issue may be in one of the following forms of papers that the journal accepts: original research papers, surveys on areas of particular interest to the community, and viewpoints offering perspectives on the future of software agents and agent-based software development.

Topics

The following is a non-exhaustive list of topics covered by the special issue:

  * Techniques and technologies for the engineering of MAS, including software engineering methodologies for agents and MAS
  * Programming languages for agents and MAS
  * Frameworks, architectures, and infrastructures for agents and MAS
  * Techniques for specification and verification of MAS
  * Pragmatic issues in the practical adoption of agents and MAS
  * Impact of reference tools, like JADE, Jason, SARL, and many others, on the practice of software agents and agent-based software development
  * Performance, load balancing, scalability, and fault-tolerance of agents and MAS
  *   Interoperability and standardisation
  * Integration with mainstream technologies and with legacy systems
  * High-profile applications of agents and MAS, including relevant projects and case studies
  * Benchmarking and testbeds for agents and MAS
  * Techniques and technologies for the integration of software agents in the IoT
