Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) in Amsterdam, the Dutch national research centre for mathematics and computer science, invites excellent researchers to apply for

Tenure-Track and Senior Researcher Positions in Secure Software Systems in Amsterdam

CWI performs innovative and excellent research in various areas of mathematics and computer science, like software engineering, cryptology, intelligent systems, optimization, and decentralized systems. CWI is a dynamic institute that is in the forefront of the development of new research lines. To this end, CWI likes to expand its activities, especially in the area of Secure Software Systems.

Job description

CWI is looking for candidates to initiate and develop new research directions in Secure Software Systems, addressing major challenges in software systems relating to security and privacy.

The challenges concern the modelling, analysis, and design of software systems that satisfy a range of security and privacy requirements related to, but not confined to, secure information flow, static and dynamic security guarantees, security testing, intrusion detection, differential privacy, security games, authentication, authorization, anonymous communication, and cryptography.

We are looking for researchers with excellent track records in computer science, with a focus on privacy and security in software systems and their scientific foundations. The tenure-track candidates are expected to develop a research program that addresses current societal demands on secure software systems, whereas senior candidates are expected to develop and lead a new group in this area. The candidates are expected to utilise synergies with other CWI research groups, like the cryptology group of prof. Ronald Cramer.

The positions

Candidates are excellent researchers with a striking and original talent. Their research focus is on innovative and curiosity-driven research.

1) Tenure track position.
Profile: Candidates must have an excellent track record and clearly be capable of independently formulating and realising a line of scientific research. Therefore candidates must already have demonstrated their ability in their discipline, having carried out some years of postdoctoral research after their PhD and having demonstrated their ability to independently generate innovative ideas.
Position: This position is offered for a fixed period of five years (possibly shorter for more experienced candidates). At the end of a successful tenure track term a permanent scientific staff position will be offered. Criteria for evaluation comprise a track record of publications that is well above average, and the ability to acquire funding and to build up an (inter)national network and reputation.

2) Permanent position for a senior candidate
Profile: Candidates must have an excellent reputation. Candidates are prominent researchers who have successfully demonstrated their ability in research as well as their abilities to build and lead a research group and to act as a coach for young researchers.
Position: This position is a permanent scientific staff position. The candidate is expected to build his/her own group of researchers that (s)he supervises and can possibly become the group leader of a new CWI group on secure software systems.

Requirements

You satisfy the profiles above. Furthermore:

1) Tenure track position.
You are a highly motivated and enthusiastic researcher and obtained your PhD degree preferably at least two years ago. You have an exemplary research record backed by publications in international top journals, conferences, and/or peer-reviewed books. You have the ability to act independently and –depending on your seniority- have worked in several research institutes, preferably in different countries. You are capable of establishing partnerships with researchers in other scientific fields. You have very good organisational and communication skills, and know how to inspire your co-workers. Moreover, you should have post-doctoral experience. In case of more seniority, the tenure-track period can be reduced.
You have ambition and potential to acquire personal research grants such as VENI/VIDI/VICI (NWO) or ERC (EU), as well as to acquire external funding for fundamental and applied research (e.g., from NWO, EU or industry).

2) Permanent position.
You are a highly motivated and enthusiastic researcher with a PhD degree. You have a high reputation as a leading scientist, shown by e.g. publications in international top journals, conferences, and/or peer-reviewed books, editorships, and invited presentations. You have proven skills to develop and lead a group of researchers. You have shown to be able to acquire funding. You are capable of establishing partnerships with researchers in other scientific fields. You have very good organisational and communication skills, and know how to inspire your co-workers.
You have ambition and potential to acquire personal research grants such as VICI (NWO) or ERC (EU), as well as to acquire external funding for fundamental and applied research (e.g., from NWO, EU or industry).

CWI expects researchers to speak Dutch at the end of the tenure track period or within 5 years after the start of their permanent position, respectively.

Terms and conditions

The terms of employment are in accordance with the Dutch Collective Labour Agreement for Research Centres ("CAO-onderzoeksinstellingen"). Depending on relevant work experience, the gross monthly starting salary for a tenure-track Researcher on a full time basis ranges from € 3,560 to € 5,757. The salary for a Senior Researcher is even more competitive.
Employees are also entitled to a holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary and a year-end bonus of 8,33%.

CWI offers attractive working conditions, including flexible scheduling and help with housing for expat employees.

CWI is recognized as an excellent research institute with world-wide reputation and is located in one of the highest quality-of-life cities of Europe.

Application

Applicants with at least two years of postdoctoral experience, should send:
- a motivation letter;
- a curriculum vitae with a list of publications;
- a copy of their thesis or of their three most prominent publications;
- the names of at least three prominent scientists who can provide letters of recommendation;
- a research statement and a well-founded, innovative research plan for a period of 5 years, including plans on how to acquire additional funding and a challenging outlook for the future, which takes into account the international research landscape.

The candidates are asked to indicate in their application which position has their preference.
