[agents] AI/robotics positions (Ph.D. student/post-doctoral researcher) in multi-agent/multi-robot path finding

Our joint artificial intelligence and robotics project on multi-agent and multi-robot path planning at the University of Southern California (USC) has a number of openings available.

Teams of agents must often assign target locations among themselves and then plan collision-free paths to their target locations. Examples include autonomous aircraft towing vehicles, automated warehouse systems, office robots, and game characters in video games. For example, thousands of robots already navigate autonomously in semi-automated warehouses to move inventory pods all the way from their storage locations to the inventory stations that need the products they store. Path planning for these robots is NP-hard, yet one must find high-quality collision-free paths for them in real-time. Drone systems on construction sites need to solve a similar problem in three dimensions. We therefore study different versions of multi-agent path finding problems, their complexities, algorithms for solving them, and their applications. You can find out more about our research at

We are looking for students and possibly a post-doctoral researcher with either a strong artificial intelligence background in heuristic search and/or multi-agent systems and an interest in robotics or a strong robotics background in trajectory planning and/or multi-robot systems and an interest in artificial intelligence.

They will have to apply to the computer science department at the end of the year and, if admitted, will start their Ph.D. studies in Fall 2019.
