First Intensive School on Cellular Automata

Co-located with the 13th International Conference on
Cellular Automata for Research and Industry (ACRI 2018)

ABOUT
-----
Cellular automata (CA) can be viewed as a mathematical abstraction of the
physical world in which all quantities are of discrete nature. Due to its
simplicity, CA turn out to be a very interesting approach to model complex
systems in which a macroscopic collective behavior emerges out of the
interaction of many simple elements. This school will introduce this approach in
a pedagogical way through many examples illustrating the essence of CA modeling.

Further, the program of the school can be integrated by attending the three ACRI
Workshops (see below for details).

SCHOOL PROGRAM (September 17)
-----------------------------
The program of the intensive school, held on the 17th of September 2018, is the
following:

- Introduction: What are CAs?: computational model, discrete dynamical system,
abstraction of physical and natural systems
- Definition: Parity rule. Neighborhood, stochastic CA, non-uniform CA,
asynchronous CA. Implementation: lookup table, on the fly computation. Number
  of possible universe
- Historical notes: from von Neumann to Langton self-reproduction CA
- Modeling of physical system: create a fictitious world where conservation laws
  and symmetries are preserved.
- Examples: snowflakes, excitable media, traffic models, lizards, homeostasis, ...
- Understanding complex systems through CAs: life, Langton ants, Wolfram
  complexity classes, ...
- Lattice gases: CA fluids, diffusion models, exact computation and
  reversibility
- Extension: lattice Boltzmann, multi-agent: in-silico modeling at a mesoscopic
  level.
- Exercises: will be inserted during the presentation

Instructors:
- Bastien Chopard (http://cui.unige.ch/~chopard/)
- Jean-Luc Falcone (http://cui.unige.ch/~falcone/publications.html)

WORKSHOPS (September 18)
------------------------
ACRI 2018 will host three thematic workshops on the 18th of September 2018:

- Asynchronous Cellular Automata (http://acri2018.disco.unimib.it/ACA)
- Crowds and Cellular Automata (http://acri2018.disco.unimib.it/CCA)
- Traffic and Cellular Automata (http://acri2018.disco.unimib.it/TCA)

The workshops will follow and complete the Intensive School on Cellular
Automata. After the introduction provided by the school, the students will be
able to attend the workshops in order to become accustomed with the latest
theoretical and practical research results on Cellular Automata.

VENUE
-----
The First Intensive School on CA will be held at Villa del Grumello, Como,
Italy, on the 17th and 18th of September 2018. The school will be followed by
the program of the 13th International Conference on Cellular Automata for
Research and Industry (ACRI 2018).

REGISTRATION
------------
The registration fees for the school and the link to the registration form can be
found at:

http://acri2018.disco.unimib.it/registration/

In particular, the "School" fee allows to attend both the Intensive School on
the 17th of September and the ACRI Workshops on the 18th of September. The
"Student" fee, in addition to the school and the workshops, allows to attend
also the ACRI main conference program from the 19th to the 21st of
September. The Student fee is reserved for master and PhD students.

CONTACTS
--------
Further information on the school will be published on the ACRI 2018 website:
