Research Fellow in Responsible Artificial Intelligence at the University of Southampton

Closing Date: 21st December 2017, Start date: Q1, 2018

We are looking for a talented and organised individual who will take up a leading role in the Responsible AI project funded by AXA Research. The post-doctoral researcher position is initially for a period of 18 months, with the potential extension for another 18 months. The post is due to start early 2018.

Applications are invited from highly skilled and ambitious researchers whose primary research areas are within Artificial Intelligence, Autonomous Systems, Machine learning, and Human-Robot Interaction. You should have a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and a track record of publication at international leading venues (e.g. AAMAS, ICRA, IROS, AAAI, IJCAI, and related journals).

The role will involve the development of novel methodologies to implement responsible forms of Artificial Intelligence. Some of the key questions to be addressed by the role are: How can decision making algorithms for intelligent agents be designed to account for the risks that they expose their end-users and the other agents they interact with? What are the design principles that can serve to ensure human interaction with autonomous agents and machine learning systems guarantee that the outcome of such interactions will be understood by the end-users and lead to efficient and effective outcomes. How can we models human intent and activities with minimal sensing of people’s environments and rely minimally on users’ self-expressed preferences in order to preserve privacy. How can we capture the provenance of decisions and data within systems involving both human and artificial actors. How can the notion of “responsibility” be developed within the reasoning of autonomous agents and the engineering of machine learning systems?

This role will also include a number of administrative duties including but not limited to the organisation of a yearly workshop, participating and contributing to international activities around Responsible AI, attendance at major international conferences, liaising with Industry, and co-supervision of a PhD student on the project.

As such, this role is suitable for a high calibre researcher looking to build up their profile for an academic career.

You will join an internationally renowned and multi-disciplinary team across the University of Southampton (where this post is based). The team won several best paper awards at CHI and AAMAS. The project is led by Dr. Sarvapali Ramchurn, whose recent AXA Research Fund Award will be supporting this project.
