The School of Industrial Engineering of Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) has a vacancy for a Ph.D. student in the area of data driven programmatic advertising decision support system.  The intended starting date for this position is Dec 1, 2017 and can be further negotiated with interested applicants.

The position is embedded in the EU-funded Eurostars project “Programmatic Advertising Decision System”, which includes several industrial partners such as OrangeGames and Triodor. The goal of the Ph.D. project is to develop a decision-support tool for revenue optimization of online companies who provide content or physical goods.  The project aims to combine techniques from Artificial Intelligence (especially, data mining and machine learning) and optimization methods to build a data-driven decision-support tool.

Organization
Eindhoven University of Technology is one of the world’s leading research universities (ranked by the Times Higher Education Supplement). It is in particular well‐known for its joint research with industry (ranked number one worldwide by the Centre for Science and Technology Studies).  The research will be conducted at Eindhoven University of Technology, at the Department of Industrial Engineering and Innovation Sciences (IE&IS), embedded within the Research Group of Information Systems (IS) and collaborating with the Research Group of Operations, Planning, Accounting and Control (OPAC).
The Information Systems Group in the School of Industrial Engineering performs advanced research in the area of business process engineering, focusing on business process management (BPM) and business process intelligence (BPI). All research is embedded in SIKS (Netherlands Research School for Information and Knowledge Systems) and Beta (the KNAW-recognized research school for Operations Management & Logistics). Department of IE&IS has a strong national and international reputation for both basic research in the academic community and applied research with industry. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to profit from the benefits that such an environment has to offer and to contribute to the ongoing research.

Job description
You, as a successful applicant, will perform the research project, and report research findings at international conferences and workshops and in scientific journals. The project that forms the context for this position also involves intensive collaboration with the high tech industry. The research will be concluded with a Ph.D. thesis. A small teaching load is part of the job description. The project will be supervised by a group of researchers led by prof.dr.ir. Uzay Kaymak from the IS group.
Requirements
You, as a successful applicant, should have solid quantitative background. You have a Master’s degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Industrial Engineering, or a similar field of study. You have good programming skills (e.g., Java, Python, R, MATLAB). You are able to collaborate with researchers from a diverse background such as computer science, information systems, and mathematics/statistics, as well as with industry. You should have a keen interest in contributing to the intersection of the aforementioned fields.  Your communication skills are excellent as is your proficiency in English.

Appointment and salary


  *   PhD candidate is appointed as temporary university employee for a four-year period.
  *   The terms of employment are governed by the Collective Labour Agreement of Universities in The Netherlands, with a monthly salary starting at € 2222,- (gross) in the first year, and increasing to € 2840,- in the fourth year, and an additional 8% holiday allowance and 8,3% end-of-year bonus. An extensive fringe benefits package is included. Additional budget allows for extensive research visits abroad and conference attendance.
