Dear all,

Delft University of Technology offers two PhD positions on the
development of algorithmic techniques to optimise flexible energy use in
industry. The research will be performed in the Algorithmics research
group in the department of Software Technology. Fundamental research in
the Algorithmics group is at the forefront of international scientific
developments in the fields of planning and scheduling, and research
results find use in complex societal challenges regarding traffic,
logistics, and the future energy system.

Renewable generation of power is often intermittent, uncertain, and
uncontrollable. As balance between demand and generation is required at
all times, flexibility in electricity demand is needed to prevent having
significant costly flexible controllable generation (from fossil energy
sources) on stand-by. Unleashing this potential of energy flexibility in
industry requires optimising the daily operations not just regarding
throughput, but also to include making cost-effective energy trading
decisions. This project aims to develop algorithmic techniques to
support both these decision problems under uncertainty.

PhD position 1 targets developing algorithms for planning under
uncertainty for optimising day-to-day operations, while PhD position 2
focuses on developing methods for dealing with the uncertainty regarding
strategic decisions on investments and on trading in bilateral contracts
and future markets.
