The School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering is looking to appoint a Senior Research Officer to work on a highly interdisciplinary project involving the Human Rights Centre (HRC), and the Institute for Social and Economic Research (ISER), working collaboratively with the charity Freedom from Torture (FfT). Applications are invited for this fixed-term post which is offered from the 1st of November 2015 (or as soon as possible thereafter) until the end of February 2017.
The project, funded by the Economic and Social Sciences Research Council (ESRC), aims to undertake a systematic requirements analysis of the needs for data capture and analysis by FfT to support their strategic objectives, and to develop the required infrastructure utisiling Big Data technologies. The project will also investigate the separation of the domain from the operational knowledge in this context and undertake research on capturing the client journey within the underlying data and processes as well as protecting the clients' privacy when high level reports are generated.
The successful candidate will have previous experience in software engineering methodologies and databases, very good knowledge of ASP.NET and C# (or a high level programming language such as Java) and experience in delivering prototypes and systems. Knowledge and experience of data modeling techniques, semantic web technologies and knowledge representation techniques (such as ontologies), big data technologies and agile development would be highly desirable.
Candidates should be graduates of computer science or information systems and be in possession of a good postgraduate degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Advanced Databases or related area.

Appointment to this full-time post will be from 1st of November or as soon as possible, based at our Colchester Campus.
