CALL FOR PAPERS
IEEE Sensors Journal Special issue on
Advances in Underwater Acoustic Sensor Networks

Underpinned by technological advances, there is a growing interest in the design, development, and deployment of Underwater Acoustic Sensor Networks (UASNs) for marine applications. Most of these applications require research in novel theoretical models or evaluation methodologies leading to practical distributed and centralized algorithms. Sustained effort in the recent years has resulted in applications now routinely adopted in UASNs, but there are still many problems awaiting a solution. Some examples of unresolved issues are managing the fouling and corrosion of electronics devices, meeting the power requirements and the general problems of maintaining equipment in a remote and harsh environment.
It is intended that this Special Issue will show the state-of-the-art in Underwater Acoustic Sensor Networks. Original research contributions, tutorials and review papers are sought in the areas related to UASNs including:

•	New underwater sensors/devices/vehicles
•	Cross-layer design and optimization for UASNs
•	Ocean currents model and sensor nodes’ mobility model for UASNs
•	Energy-efficient data collection, storage, dissemination and retrieval by UASNs
•	Network coverage and node placement in UASNs
•	Security, fault tolerance, and diagnostics of UASNs
•	Renewable energies in UASNs for marine monitoring
•	New materials, and packaging for harsh environmental sensing
•	Environmental monitoring in coastal areas or underwater environment
•	Autonomous ocean sampling and disaster prevention
•	Targets tracking and assisted navigation
•	Tactical Surveillance by UASNs
•	Underwater hardware/software platforms for acoustic communication and test beds for UASNs
•	Undersea and offshore exploration
•	Study cases, implementations and real deployments of UASNs

Solicited and invited papers shall undergo the standard IEEE Sensors Journal peer review proccess. All manuscripts must be submitted on-line, via the IEEE ScholarOne Manuscripts™, see http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/sensors. When submitting, please indicate in the “Manuscript Type” roll down menu, and also by e-mail to Ms. Alison Larkin, a.larkin at ieee.org, that the paper is intended for the “Recent Advances in Underwater Acoustic Sensor Network” Special Issue. Authors are particularly encouraged to suggest names of potential reviewers for their manu¬scripts in the space provided for these recommen¬dations in ScholarOne Manuscripts™. For manuscript prepara¬tion and submission, please follow the guidelines in the Information for Authors at the IEEE Sensors Journal web page, http://www.ieee-sensors.org/journals

Deadlines:
•	Manuscript Submission: (Extended) March 31, 2015
•	Notification of Acceptance: September 1, 2015
•	Final Manuscript published in IEEE explore: November 1, 2015
•	Tentative date of paper issue: March 1, 2016
