[OVERVIEW]
When we try to understand diverse complex systems such as a human brain, social systems, 
Internet, and WWW, it is not enough to simply dig out knowledges from the vein of data. It is 
required to establish new "constructive data mining process" consisting of iterative processes 
of the generation of data veins and exploration of new knowledge from them. The primary 
aim of this workshop is to facilitate the collaboration among researchers on multi-agent simu-
lation (MASim) and data mining (DM). While MASim researchers have simulation and modeling 
technologies, DM researchers have analytical and knowledge retrieval techniques. There is the 
complementary relationship between MASim and DM researches  so that the ultimate goal of 
this workshop is to create new multi-agent research area by synthesizing two different areas.

[TECHNICAL ISSUES]
Multi-Agent simulation is primary technology in AI. MASim methodologies/technologies have 
not been sufficiently mature though, its scientific significance is getting quite high to under-
stand and analyze complex large-scale systems, such as human societies. Data mining is ano-
ther primary AI technology to retrieve hidden information or knowledge from big data. However, 
real data for the mining does not always include essential elements of a target complex system. 
Thus, a simulation is promising way to generate meaningful data which is hard to obtain in the 
real world.  

To understand large-scale complex phenomena, technologies/methodologies for reproduction, 
knowledge discovery, and computational modeling are required. Although MASim researchers 
are good at working on the implementation of tools for multi-agent simulations and the design 
of computational model, they are not necessarily experts of knowledge discovery who can 
extract essentials of complex systems. On the other hand, DM researchers are technician for 
knowledge discovery though, it is usually hard for them to actively analyze obtained knowledge 
through simulations. Thus, the workshop should be of interest to researchers addressing com-
plex systems from different viewpoints, such as implementation, modeling, and analysis. The 
important point is that the workshop can attract broad-ranging AI researchers by synthesizing 
two hot research areas, MASim and DM. 


[TOPICS OF INTEREST]
We solicit papers dealing with, but not limited to, the following topics:

- Multi-agent simulation
- Social simulation
- Simulations on complex network
- Collective Intelligence
- Social and economic phenomena in MASim
- Emergent evolution system
- Evolution system
- Human behavior modeling
- Learning from big data from MASim
- Knowledge discovery with MASim
- Crowd computing technology for MASim
- Basic modeling theory  

[IMPORTANT DATES]
Paper Submission Deadline: April 25, 2014
Author Notification : May 9, 2014
Camera Ready Submission Deadline: May 16, 2014
Workshop: August 11-14, 2014 (the concrete date is tbd)

[SUBMISSION]
Each submitted paper will be reviewed by two or three reviewers from program committees. 
Reviewers evaluate each paper based on relevance, significance, clarity, originality, and correct-
ness.
Authors can submit a paper formatted according to the IEEE 2-column format.The page limit is 
set to 4 pages.

[PUBLICATION]
Accepted papers will be published in the WI-IAT workshop proceedings by the IEEE Computer 
Society Press. The corresponding-authors will be notified at all time, for the submission, notifi-
cation, and confirmation on the attendance. Submitting a paper to the conference, special 
session or workshops means that, if the paper is accepted, at least one author should attend 
the conference to present the paper and should then register to the conference with a regular 
fee.
