2 POST-DOCTORAL/RESEARCH FELLOW POSITIONS

Agents, Interaction & Complexity Group
University of Southampton

*Closing Date: * Wednesday 18 December 2013

Applications are invited for two Research Fellows in the Agents,
Interaction and Complexity (AIC) Group in Electronics and Computer
Science (ECS) at the University of Southampton, UK. These positions are
for a 1-year period in the first instance, with possible extension to 2
years. You will be working on an EPSRC-funded digital economy project
(EP/K039989/1
<http://gow.epsrc.ac.uk/NGBOViewGrant.aspx?GrantRef=EP/K039989/1>) with
an interdisciplinary team consisting of researchers from Economics,
Management and Computer Science.

The project, led by Prof m.c. schraefel, is seeking to understand the
specific obstacles to, and mechanisms for, embodying *meaningful
consent* in the digital economy. Despite being asked to "agree"
constantly to terms of service, we do not currently have "meaningful
consent", in particular with regards to privacy. The project aims to
understand issues surrounding informed consent, develop technologies for
enabling informed consent, as well as considering business and policy
implications.

The two posts have a different focus. One post will focus on the
*socio-economic* aspects of understanding consent, and issues
surrounding privacy, through *experimental design* with human
participants. It will also involve work on outlining design principles
and HCI best practice in relation to obtaining informed consent. You
will be working directly with *Dr Michael Vlassopoulos* and *Dr Mirco
Tonin* from the Economics division, as well as being part of a larger
interdisciplinary team. This position requires a PhD or equivalent
professional qualifications and experience in one of the following
disciplines: computer science, human-computer interaction, experimental
economics, or web science. In addition, programming and statistical
skills are essential. Prior experience with setting up human trials is
desired but not essential.

The other post will focus on technologies for enabling informed consent,
and in particular *agent-based systems* and *automated negotiation*. You
will be working directly with *Dr Enrico Gerding* from the Agents,
Interaction and Complexity Research Group, as well as being part of a
larger interdisciplinary team. A PhD or equivalent professional
qualifications and experience are required in agent-based computing or
artificial intelligence.

The starting date is the beginning of February 2014, although
consideration can be given to later start dates.

Informal enquiries may be made to Dr Michael Vlassopoulos
(M.Vlassopoulos at soton.ac.uk
<mailto:M.Vlassopoulos at soton.ac.uk?subject=inquiry%20about%20research%20fellow%20position>)
for the position with the socio-economic focus, or Dr Enrico Gerding
(eg at ecs.soton.ac.uk
<mailto:eg at ecs.soton.ac.uk?subject=inquiry%20about%20research%20fellow%20position>)
for the one with the agent-based focus.
