The fifth biannual Humaine Association Conference on Affective
Computing and Intelligent Interaction (ACII 2013) will be held in
Geneva, Switzerland on September 2-5, 2013.

The Conference series on Affective Computing and Intelligent
Interaction is the premier international forum for research on
affective and multimodal human-machine interaction and systems.

This ACII edition will emphasize the humanistic side of affective
computing by promoting publications at the cross-road between
engineering and human sciences (including biological, social and
cultural aspects of human life).

The ACII conference will be organized by the Computer Vision and
Multimedia Laboratory and the Swiss Center for Affective Sciences from
the University of Geneva. Geneva has one of Europe's most beautiful
sceneries, situated between a lake and mountains and is a highly
international city where English speaking is common. It has been a
cultural center for many centuries and home to many creative spirits
in the fields of science and art.

ACII 2013 - Call for Interactive Events (Demos) Proposals
----------------------

http://www.acii2013.org/

The ACII 2013 Interactive Event Session serves as a forum for
researchers and practitioners to showcase recent advances in affective
computing applications and new forms of intelligent interactions. The
aim of this session is to demonstrate innovative affective
technologies and show the large scope covered by these technologies.
The presenters will have the opportunity to discuss their systems with
a broad international scientific community and possibly to showcase
them in front of the public. Accepted demonstrations will also be
published as two-page extended abstract in the Conference Proceedings.
Following the theme of the ACII conference we particularly encourage
the submission of demonstrations and interactive events applied to the
domain of the humanities and arts although the call is open to any
application domain. Demonstrations including some experimental
component (for instance for the system validation) will be preferred.
We welcome submissions close to end-products as well as prototypes.
Innovative commercial products using affective technology are accepted
provided that they were not previously published in scientific
proceedings.
Submission for the interactive demos

Interactive demo proposals can be submitted until April 29, 2013.
Review and acceptation criteria include scientific contribution,
originality and innovation, societal impact, potential for widespread
usage and relevance to the ACII theme of this year.
Demonstration submissions should be accompanied by reasonably detailed
technical explanations of the methods used. More specifically your
initial submission should include one document containing three parts:
1) A two-page paper for inclusion in the ACII 2011 proceedings. The
document should include (a) a brief description of the system and the
problem it attempts to address, (b) a summary of the technical content
of the system, (c) results of a formal evaluation (if applicable) or
of an experiment to be carried out during the demonstration (if
applicable).
2) A URL link to a movie / screen capture or live version of the system.
3) A detailed description of the technical set-up and requirements. By
default, the conference will provide a table and two chairs for each
demo. Special requirements regarding the hardware and software, used
modalities, space, and infrastructure (such as power supplies, network
access, etc) need to be explicitly mentioned in the submission. We
will attempt to provide necessary equipment and infrastructure, but
demonstrators will be required to provide their own computers and
special-purpose equipment.

The procedure to send the Interactive Event Proposal will be
communicated soon on the conference website.

Please note that authors are required to show live demos of their

ACII 2013 - Call for Doctoral Consortium Papers
----------------------

International Conference on Affective Computing and Intelligent
Interaction, 2-5 September 2013, Geneva, Switzerland

ACII 2013 web page: http://www.acii2013.org/

Overview

The ACII 2013 Doctoral Consortium serves as forum for PhD students to
share ideas about the theories behind affective computing, its
development and its application. The goal is to provide PhD students
with an opportunity to present their work to a group of mentors and
peers from an international community, to receive feedback on their
doctoral research plan and progress, and to build a cohort of young
researchers interested in affective computing. We invite students from
all PhD granting institutions who are in the process of forming or
carrying out a plan for their PhD research in the area of affective
computing. The Consortium will be held during the ACII conference, the
final date will be determined soon.

The Fiorella De Rosis Award

The best PhD student paper will be awarded « The Fiorella De Rosis
Award » after Prof Fiorella de Rosis, who co-chaired the first ACII
Doctoral Consortium in Lisbon (2007). The Humaine Association
(http://emotion-research.net/association) is responsible for the ACII
conference and for the Fiorella de Rosis Award. It has been awarded in
2009 and in 2011 and it aims to commemorate Fiorella De Rosis as a
founder of the Association and as an outstanding researcher in the
emotional computation research field. As it was pointed out in the
2011 ACII Doctoral Consortium call
(http://www.acii2011.org/call-for-doctoral-consortium-papers) « Her
research made the fundamental point that emotion needs to be
integrated into logical models of argument. She was also one of the
field’s idealists, always ready to speak out when she felt that others
were settling for the least awkward rather than the best. She combined
intellect and conviction with genuine warmth, and her death in 2008
was deeply felt throughout the community. One of her constant concerns
was to ensure that young researchers were encouraged. For that reason,
the HUMAINE Association felt it was right to commemorate her by an
award for the best paper at the ACII Doctoral Consortium. »

Who should apply?

While we encourage applications from students at any stage of doctoral
training, the doctoral consortium will benefit most the students who
are in the process of forming or developing their doctoral research.
These students will have passed their qualifiers or have completed the
majority of their coursework, will be planning or developing their
dissertation research, and will not be very close to completing their
dissertation research. Students from any PhD granting institution
whose research falls within the Affective Computing field are
encouraged to apply.

Submissions guidelines

Graduate students pursuing a PhD degree in a field related to
Affective Computing should submit the following materials:

a) Paper: A description of your PhD research plan and progress.
Submissions must not exceed eight pages (including references). The
submissions will not be anonymous.
In particular, it should cover:
a1) The key research questions and motivation of your research
a2) Background and related work that informs your research
a3) A statement of hypotheses or a description of the scope of the
technical problem
a4) The methodology to achieve the objectives and the proposed solution(s),
a5) A description of work done so far and a tentative plan for future work
a6) A statement of research contributions to date (if any) and
expected contributions of your PhD work to Affective Computing.
   a7) Reference list

b) CV: A two-page curriculum vitae of the student.

c) Participation Statement (maximum 500 words): A student statement
describing how s/he expects to benefit from participating to the ACII
Doctoral Consortium, on what aspects of the research plan the students
would like feedback, and how the student's PhD research fits within
the ACII community.

Paper topics should be related to the conference topics, which are
given in the general call for papers (see www.acii2013.org). The
Proceedings of the Doctoral Consortium will be published in the
Conference Proceedings and should follow the format of the ACII
papers.

The submission deadline is April 15, 2013. Please submit your paper
through the Conference Submission system.

Review Process
The Doctoral Consortium will follow an accurate review process in
which submissions will be evaluated by a number of factors including
(1) the quality of the submission, (2) the expected benefits of the
consortium for the student's PhD research, and (3) the student's
contribution to the diversity of topics, backgrounds, and
institutions, in order of importance. More particularly, the quality
of the submission will be evaluated based on the potential
contributions of the research to the field of affective computing and
its impact on the field and beyond. Finally, we hope to achieve a
diversity of research topics, disciplinary backgrounds, methodological
approaches, and home institutions in this year's Doctoral Consortium
cohort.

Attendance
All authors of accepted submissions are expected to attend the
Doctoral Consortium and the main conference poster session. The
attendees will present their PhD work as a talk at the Consortium and
as a poster at the conference poster session. A detailed program for
the Consortium and the participation guidelines for the poster session
will be available after the camera-ready deadline.
