The service sector is already the largest sector of most economies and the trend is making the concept of service more and more central in human activities. The global economy and the Internet has changed the perspective by making every human activity interconnected to others, and the service approach has been adopted to facilitate the dynamic grow of such globalized systems. The term Service Science has been introduced to provide a framework to study the interdisciplinary nature of design and development of service-centered systems. The challenge is to be able to build service ecosystems where services can be accessed and composed to solve problems ranging from personal needs to business processes, from research to industry, from private to public.
Service oriented perspectives represent an opportunity of innovation and an answer to current challenges for social welfare, sustainability and everyday life. Among others, the ageing of population phenomenon challenge for service design in terms of digital divide, e-readiness, needs elicitation and satisfaction of new competences. Furthermore, research skills are required in particular for domains such as cloud computing (services related to resources provisioning in a networked world), e-government (administrative services to citizens), e-science (scalable services for both global and local researchers), smart cities (everyday and mobility services to citizens).
These strategic domains will be the backbone of the school-learning path to allow the GII Doctoral School 2011 participants to apply concepts, models and techniques learned with the lectures. Specific case studies will be investigated under the supervision of service-science researchers.

Program

The School is organized on a two-week format, with lectures and working group sessions on cases and practices.
One day organized in collaboration with IBM with the goal of presenting the approach and advances by one of the leading company in the
Service Science movement.
On the last day, participants will present their working group's Report for the evaluation and the final general discussion.
