Applications are invited for the position of a Research Programmer in the Intelligence, Agents, Multimedia Group, in the School of Electronics and Computer Science at the University of Southampton. The School is the largest of its kind in the UK and in the last Research Assessment Exercise (in 2008) Computer Science was ranked joint second in the UK for the quality of its research, with 85 per cent of its research work receiving either the top 4* rating (defined as 'world leading') or the 3* rating ('internationally excellent').
The successful candidate will work on a Knowledge Transfer Secondment funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), in collaboration with the Hampshire County Council Emergency Planning department on extending the outputs of the ALADDIN project (Autonomous Agents for Decentralised Data and Information networks - see http://www.aladdinproject.org). In particular, work will involve designing high-quality software tools to simulate disasters and evaluate emergency response strategies in city-scale disasters. The aim is to produce software that will be used in the certification of planning applications, emergency responder training, and act as a prototype for further commercial applications.
The post will be based in the Intelligence, Agents, Multimedia (IAM) research group (www.iam.ecs.soton.ac.uk). You will be working with Dr Sarvapali Ramchurn, and will be joining an internationally renowned team applying techniques from coalition formation, decentralised coordination, and multi-agent systems to a range of complex real-world problems.
You should possess a PhD in a relevant discipline (software engineering, computer science or artificial intelligence), and have experience of developing software in a professional capacity. In particular, experience of decentralised systems, multi-agent systems and intelligent agents would be advantageous. You must have also worked on a relevant EPSRC project (i.e., dealing with agent-based techniques for disaster management).
The duration of the post is 12 months starting in November 2010.
Informal enquiries may be made to Dr Sarvapali Ramchurn (sdr at ecs.soton.ac.uk).
The closing date for applications is 23 September 2010 at 12.00 noon. Applications can be made via: http://www.jobs.soton.ac.uk/soton/jobboard/JobDetails.aspx?__ID=*89D6AB6E8061B926
