Integrating Cultures: Formal Models and Agent-Based Simulations

Following the success of the recent workshop on "Integrating Cultures:
Models, Simulations and Applications" at the Lorentz Centre in the
Netherlands, we are editing a volume on this topic. The proposed project
has been submitted to Springer for possible publication in its new book
Series on the Philosophy of Sociality, edited by Prof. Raimo Tuomela.
Springer has expressed great interest in the volume and has agreed to
review the volume for the series.

 

Introduction

Culture can be seen as a way to view the world by giving to people a
conceptual apparatus which is related to their environment. Collective
norms, values and behaviour influence and arise from interactions of
socially and culturally sensitive agents. Computational models of
culture are valuable to understand societies and organisations, but
there have been very few attempts at analyzing, from a computational
point of view, how culture may arise, develop and evolve through time.
This volume will discuss and introduce models of culture that enable to
represent and reason about different, possibly conflicting, social norms
and practices arising from different cultures. Such models furthermore
enable to integrate concepts that play a role in culture from the
perspective of the different research areas that study culture.

 

 

Target Audience

Researchers in Philosophy, Artificial Intelligence, Social Simulation,
Sociology, Anthropology, Intercultural Communication, Collective
Intentionality, Social Ontology, and more generally Philosophy and
related theoretical matters related to the foundations of the Social
Sciences (and also to an extent the Humanities)

 

 

Recommended topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

-          (Formal) Models of Culture

-          Cognitive Models of Culture: Beliefs, Symbols, Values,
Expectations, Norms

-          Cultural Brokerage

-          Artificial Cultures

-          Developing Cultures

-          Organizational culture and (information) systems

-          Agent Based Models of Culture

-          Agent Based Simulation for Culture

-          Architectures for Cultural Serious Games

-          Culture sensitive system design

-          Ethical aspects of simulation systems

 

 

Submission Procedure

Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before 30
August 2010 a 1000 to 1500 word chapter proposal abstract clearly
explaining the topic and purpose of his or her proposed chapter and how
their chapter relates to models of culture. Authors of proposals will be
notified at latest by 30 September 2010 about the acceptance or
rejection of their proposals. The authors of selected proposals will be
asked to submit a complete chapter of 15 to 20 pages, conforming to some
chapter organizational guidelines.  All submissions should be submitted
electronically following the Springer template (found at
http://www.springer.com/computer/lncs?SGWID=0-164-6-793341-0)

 

Full chapters are expected to be submitted by November 30, 2010. All
submitted chapters will be reviewed by an international scientific
reviewing committee. Authors will also be requested to serve as
reviewers on this committee.
