COMPETITION BETWEEN MARKETS and the CAT TOURNAMENT

PURPOSE:

The TAC Market Design (or CAT) Tournament was initiated in 2007 to encourage
research into competition between marketplaces, and into automated and
adaptive market mechanism design. The Tournament has now been run
successfully four years in succession, with entrants coming from every
continent. The Tournament has helped to focus and coalesce a computational
research community in Catallactics, the science of economic exchanges;
research papers arising from the Tournament have been published in journals
and workshops in e-commerce, in artificial intelligence, and in multi-agent
systems. Further details on the CAT Tournament and its operation are
available here:

http://www.marketbasedcontrol.com/blog/?page_id=5

We now invite original research papers arising from involvement in the CAT
Tournament and/or dealing with automated mechanism design and competition
between markets for a special issue of the journal, "Electronic Commerce
Research and Applications" (ECRA). The aim of this special issue is to

collect together the key learnings of this emerging area of computational
economics, for the benefit of both online market designers and their
participating traders. It is hoped that the special issue will also act as
a springboard for future research into this exciting multi-disciplinary

area.

EDITORS:

The special issue will be co-edited by:

* Enrico Gerding, University of Southampton, UK. eg [at] ecs.soton.ac.uk
(Coordinating Editor)

* Peter McBurney, University of Liverpool, UK. mcburney [at] liverpool.ac.uk

* Simon Parsons, Brooklyn College, New York, USA. parsons [at]

Interested authors should feel free to direct any questions to the special
issue editors. All papers should be submitted via ECRA's submission system

at:

      http://ees.elsevier.com/ecra/

as specified in the submission guidelines.

TOPICS:

The special issue will be devoted to all aspects of competition between
marketplaces, and automated and adaptive market mechanism design. Original
research arising from the CAT Tournament or from the use of the JCAT
competitive markets software simulation platform is relevant and most
welcome. We seek high-quality, unpublished contributions on the following
and related topics:

* Competition between economic markets

* Automated mechanism design

* Adaptive and evolutionary mechanism design

* CAT Tournament market (specialist) strategies and analysis

* CAT Tournament trader strategies and analysis

* Co-evolution of market rules and trading strategies

* Networked markets and between-market influences

* Computational aspects of competitive mechanism design

* Multiple, dynamic equilibria in markets

* Simulations using the JCAT competitive markets software platform.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: The submission deadline for full papers is 1 December
2010. Authors are encouraged to submit brief abstracts to the special issue
editors prior to 1 October 2010, as a means to gauge interest.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:

Only original and unpublished research papers will be considered. Authors
should limit their initial submissions to no more than 32 double-spaced
pages in 12-point font with appropriate margins, inclusive of all materials
(i.e., references, figures, tables and appendices). Author names and
affiliations should be listed on the first page of the paper; the reviewing
will be single blind only. All papers should be submitted via ECRA's
submission system at

 http://ees.elsevier.com/ecra.

Authors should select "CAT Tournament" when they reach the "Article Type"
step in the submission process. Authors may request a sample paper from the
editors for a full formatting sample. Authors should follow Elsevier's
Electronic Commerce Research and Applications manuscript format, which can
be found on the Elsevier Web site at:

REVIEW PROCESS:

The special issue editors will return first reviews and AE reports no later
than 90 days from the date of submission, approximately 1 March 2011. We
will use a developmental reviewing approach for this special issue, with the
aim of helping special issue authors to achieve very high quality final
publications. Second and third round reviews, as needed, will be completed
on an expedited basis, if authors are able to turn their revisions around
quickly. We also will provide special issue authors with an indication as
early as possible of rejection for the special issue, including on the basis
of a first reading by the special issue editors. Inappropriately targeted
or under-developed papers will be returned immediately to the authors.

PUBLICATION DATE:

The publication of this special issue will occur on a "best effort" basis
some time in 2012 or early 2013. The actual date of publication depends on
the timing of completion of all of the articles that it will contain, and
also is subject to the editorial staff's and publisher's ability to schedule
it.

Submission of full papers: 1 December 2010

Initial decisions: 1 March 2011

Final CRC due (tentative): 1 May 2011
