PhD studentship position at 4C in collaboration with Intel
We are seeking applicants for a PhD position at Cork Constraint Computation
Centre (4C), on a collaborative project between 4C and the "Intel Labs
Europe" IT research team, Leixlip, Ireland. This will be jointly funded by
the Irish Research Council for Science and Engineering Technology (IRCSET)
and Intel.
The project is concerned with developing Artificial Intelligence-based
methods for predictive building control; in particular, it will involve
modelling and predicting building occupant behaviour and preferences, making
use of diverse sources of information about the locations of occupants. This
project complements and relates to work being done in the Science Foundation
Ireland Strategic Research Cluster, ITOBO, on Intelligent Building
Operation. The studentship will be based in Cork, and will involve research
visits to the Intel site in Leixlip, west of Dublin.
IRCSET studentships are highly competitive. The candidate should have (or be
about to obtain) a good honours degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or
another related subject, and should have good programming skills. Knowledge
of building control or artificial intelligence techniques - such as machine
learning or reasoning with uncertainty/preferences - would be an advantage.
The Cork Constraint Computation Centre (www.4c.ucc.ie) at University College
Cork in Ireland is one of the leading academic centres of constraint
programming research in the world, and a major centre of research in
Artificial Intelligence. The centre has about 50 staff members, including
academics, research staff and students, from over a dozen countries and
collaborates with researchers from many countries. It, therefore, has
considerable experience absorbing non-Irish including non-EU researchers
into its organisation. 4C is collaborating on research projects with a
number of companies and has an Industry Associates Program
(www.4c.ucc.ie/iap) with over 50 members. 4C is part of the Computer Science
Department, and is situated in the new Western Gateway Building, which is
about a mile from the centre of Cork City, and a short walk from the main
University College Cork campus.
Intel Corporation is the world's largest semiconductor manufacturer, and
develops advanced integrated digital technology platforms for the computing
and communications industries. Research and Development at Intel comprises
more than 6,000 researchers and scientists operating collaboratively across
the world. The Intel Ireland campus, is Intel's fourth largest manufacturing
site. In 2009, Intel announced the formation of Intel Labs Europe (ILE)
housed in the Leixlip, Ireland campus. ILE aims to drive even closer
collaboration with European researchers and policy makers on EU initiatives
including exploratory research and methods of using ICT to improve the
efficiency of industries and the environment.
