3RD WORKSHOP ON ONTOLOGIES AND THEIR APPLICATIONS (WONTO’2008)
==============================================================

26-30 October 2008
Salvador, BA, Brazil
www.cin.ufpe.br/wonto2008

A collocated event at the Joint Conference SBIA-SBRN-JRI’08

SBIA'2008 (the XIX Brazilian Artificial Intelligence Symposium)
SBRN'2008 (the X Brazilian Neural Networks Symposium)
JRI’2008 (the Brazilian Intelligent Robotic Journey)
http://www.sbia2008.ufba.br/index.html

Being now one of the most researched topics in the computer science
mainstream, ontologies are being accepted as good solutions for diverse
areas like Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering and Databases.
They can change drastically the current reality of information handling:
other applied areas such as knowledge management, electronic commerce,
tutoring and geographic systems, e-government and many other application
areas are also starting to take advantage of ontologies to improve their
systems.

For these reasons, ontology research and practice has recently received
a very strong boost, in particular from the idea of the Semantic Web. In
the last years, many research projects and even institutions have been
created to devote their efforts on producing research that supports the
large-scale use of ontologies.

Following the success of the two editions of the Workshop on Ontologies
and their Applications, we intend, with this second edition, to enrich
the discussion on how to enhance ontologies’ applicability, thus
realizing this promising technology in general, but also in specific
settings, such as e-business, information gathering and e-commerce to
name but a few.

Topics of Interest:
===================

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

Ontology Engineering
- methodologies
- capture and learning
- management

Semantic consistency
- foundational ontologies
- upper-level ontologies
- evaluation methods, applications and problems

Semantic Interoperability
- composition and modularity
- merging, mapping and alignment
- ontology language interoperability

Enhancement of ontology applicability
- linguistic ontologies applied to text processing
- patterns of ontologies for specific applications

Ontologies for Information Sharing
- ontology-based information integration
- mediators and brokers
- agents and ontologies

Ontology Applications
- Semantic Web
- knowledge management
- e-commerce, e-government
- e-learning and e-science
                               - agents and multiagents patterns and
applications
- information retrieval, extraction and classification

Workshop format and attendance:
===============================

We intend to avoid the usual conference format, where papers are
presented and the audience plays a rather passive role. Therefore, in
order to foster lively and fruitful discussion, the workshop sessions
will be defined according to groups of topics formed from accepted
papers. In each group of topics, we plan to allocate around one-third of
the time for debates.
Attendance will be limited to 80 registrations, formed by workshop
papers authors and interested members of the community. Workshop
attendees are required to register at the main joint conference
SBIA-SBRN-JRI’2008. For more information, please consult the conference
website at http://www.sbia2008.ufba.br/index.html .

Round Table
===========

A round table will close the event, whose main theme is the integration
of Ibero-American research on ontologies. Some topics of discussion can be :

- Mapping of the ontology research in Ibero-American countries – who’s
doing what
- Research projects going on – which are the partnerships already
established among Ibero-American institutions and between them and other
foreign countries
- Potential partnerships
- The possibilities of boosting ontology research – prospective areas
for Ibero-American research on the topics
- Ibero-American ontology-related events mapping – isn’t it high time
for creating our own ontology conference?

Submission procedure:
=====================

We encourage the submission of high-quality papers based on entirely new
work or surveys, both meeting the foci of the workshop. Papers must be
written in English and may have a length of up to 12 pages, including
tables, figures, and references. Like the main conference, papers must
conform to the Springer LNCC/LNAI style. It is recommended that authors
use Springer-Verlag template files (see
http://www.springer.de/comp/lncs/authors.html, section "Proceedings and
Other Multi-author Volumes" for formatting instructions) to minimize
possible conflicts of paper length when preparing the camera ready.

Papers should be formatted in PDF (preferred) or PostScript, and
submitted electronically only, through the JEMS Conference Management
System web site (at https://submissoes.sbc.org.br/home.cgi?c=718 ).
Submitted papers will be peer-reviewed by at least two program committee
members and/or additional reviewers/referees. Accepted papers will be
published in the workshop proceedings, in the CDROM with the joint
conference technical papers and in the CEURS online.

At least one of the authors of accepted papers has to register for the
main conference (SBIA-SBRN-JRI’2008), otherwise the paper will not be
included in the proceedings.

Any other questions regarding papers submission may be directed to one
of the organizers.

Context of the workshop and the collocated conferences:
=======================================================

SBIA'2008 is the 19th conference of the SBIA conference series, which is
the leading conference in Brazil for presentation of research and
applications in Artificial Intelligence. However, since the 1990's it
has also attracted researchers from all over the world, when it started
to have an international program committee and also keynote invited
speakers.

SBIA’2008 will be held together with the X Brazilian Neural Networks
Symposium (SBRN) and the JRI’08 (Journey of Intelligent Robotics). The
proceedings of these two conferences will be published in a single
volume of the Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence series of
Springer-Verlag, as occurred in many SBIA past editions.

The Joint conference will feature invited talks and tutorials by
world-leading researchers. More information can be found at the main
conference web site (http://www.sbia2008.ufba.br/index.html).

About the city:
===============

Due to its beauty among other unique features, Salvador has become a
primary destination for international tourism. Famous for its history,
nice beaches, for the legacy left by people from other continents, for
the religious syncretism, and for its hospitable people, the capital of
the state of Bahia has staged and has been the object of several
studies, conducted by professionals from different fields. It also draws
visitors from everywhere, who arrive in the city seduced by the best
kind of advertisement there is: The word –of-mouth.

Our main purpose is to welcome visitors/lectures, offer them the best
conditions to participate in SBIA/SBRN/JRI 2008, and also offer the best
rides, restaurants, hotels, and trips inside the Bahia State and the
Northeastern region of Brazil.

Venue:
======

The conference will take place at Bahia Othon Palace Hotel
(http://www.othonhotels.com/H00260/index.asp), in Salvador, Bahia,
Brazil, a de luxe hotel, with 12 floors, 265 apartments and 13 suites.
As a result of a daring architectural project, from all apartments,
customers have a sea view.
